Last Friday, indie label Absolutely Kosher Records announced they were ceasing the release of records and that the upcoming Himalayan Bear release for Oct. 11 would be their last.
In their official statement via the label’s site, owner Cory Brown said that there wasn’t “grand plan [or] a new chapter waiting to be written.” Over the past few days sites have delivered the news to indie fans across the country. We caught up with Brown, who told us that it wasn’t out of left field and described that they had been struggling for about two years.
“We’ve been changing things up, re-strategizing to reduce our obligations and cut down our overhead,” Brown revealed via the phone. “Unfortunatly none of the changes we made were on the scale and certainly not at the pace that we needed it to be.”
For 13 years, Brown and Absolutely Kosher produced quality records from talented bands, and Brown never questioned the quality of what the company was putting out; unfortunately they never received the notice they deserved.
Brown doesn’t know if or when he will return, but admits during the middle of the company’s run they enjoyed success. However, he does say that he has the opportunity to return if he wants to.
“If I ever do want to get back into this I have that option because there’s no partners in Absolutely Kosher and there’s no buyout or anything like that.”
As for the eight bands that were currently on the roster, Brown said he has contacted other labels trying to find them homes. Brown cites his responsibility to the bands and himself to move on with the right foot forward.
“Now this frees up a little bit more time,” Brown said of trying to reevaluate what comes next.
